GoldenEye 007 - PC Online Multiplayer Setup
This guide explains how to play the original Nintendo 64 version of GoldenEye 007 online using Project64 and the AQZ Netplay Input Plugin.
AQZ adds online multiplayer functionality to compatible Nintendo 64 emulators such as Project64, allowing players on different computers to play games that originally supported local multiplayer.
What You Will Need
1. Project64 with the AQZ Netplay Input Plugin
2. Your own compatible GoldenEye 007 game image
3. A controller or keyboard configured through Project64
4. An internet connection
For the best experience, a wired internet connection is recommended.
==================================================
STEP 1 - DOWNLOAD PROJECT64 + AQZ NETPLAY
==================================================
The official AQZ Netplay page provides Project64 3.0.1 already bundled with the AQZ Netplay Input Plugin:
AQZ Netplay Plugin - Official Download and Instructions
Download the Project64 3.0.1 + AQZ bundle.
You can also download the AQZ plugin separately from the same page if you already have a compatible Project64 installation.
==================================================
STEP 2 - CONFIGURE YOUR CONTROLLER
==================================================
Open Project64.
Go to:
Options → Input Settings
Select and configure the input plugin you want to use with your controller or keyboard.
AQZ relies on the configured input plugin to read your actual controller/keyboard inputs.
If only one person is playing from your computer, make sure only one local controller is configured as plugged in.
If multiple people are playing locally from the same computer, configure one controller for each local player.
==================================================
STEP 3 - PREPARE GOLDENEYE 007
==================================================
You will need your own compatible copy/game image of GoldenEye 007.
SGAWeb does not provide or distribute GoldenEye 007 ROM/game files.
Add your legally obtained GoldenEye 007 game image to Project64 and make sure the game launches correctly before attempting netplay.
==================================================
STEP 4 - MAKE SURE EVERY PLAYER USES MATCHING DATA
==================================================
AQZ requires the players' emulated game state to remain synchronized.
If you are using a GoldenEye 007 save file, make sure every player has the exact same save file.
Project64 normally stores save files inside its:
Save
folder.
Send the matching save file to everyone who will participate before starting the session.
Using different save data can cause the emulation session to desynchronize.
==================================================
STEP 5 - START GOLDENEYE AND OPEN AQZ NETPLAY
==================================================
Launch GoldenEye 007 through Project64.
When the game starts, the AQZ Netplay window should appear.
You can now either:
- Join a public AQZ server
or
- Host a private AQZ server
==================================================
STEP 6 - JOIN A PUBLIC SERVER
==================================================
AQZ provides a public server list.
You can double-click a server in the list to create a room.
You can also join a server or room manually using:
/join <host>[:port][/room]
If no port is specified, AQZ uses port:
6400
If no room is specified, the server can create a room with a random ID.
==================================================
STEP 7 - HOST A PRIVATE SERVER (OPTIONAL)
==================================================
If you would rather host your own private session, AQZ provides the following command:
/host [port]
The default port is:
6400
Your firewall may ask whether Project64/AQZ is allowed to accept network connections. Allow the connection when appropriate.
Hosting directly may also require TCP port forwarding through your router.
If you do not want to configure private hosting, using an existing public AQZ server is generally easier.
==================================================
STEP 8 - SET YOUR PLAYER NAME
==================================================
You can change your AQZ player name using:
/name <name>
For example:
/name SGAdmin
AQZ will remember the name for future sessions.
==================================================
STEP 9 - CHECK CONTROLLER ASSIGNMENTS
==================================================
If the controllers need to be assigned to different GoldenEye player positions, AQZ provides the:
/map
command.
For example:
/map 1 2
would map local controller 1 to player 2.
This can be useful when organizing which participant controls each GoldenEye multiplayer player slot.
==================================================
STEP 10 - START THE MATCH
==================================================
Wait until everyone has joined the AQZ room and is ready.
Then use:
/start
AQZ will start the synchronized emulation session.
From there, enter GoldenEye 007's Multiplayer mode and configure your match normally.
You should now be able to play GoldenEye 007 multiplayer online.
==================================================
CONNECTION RECOMMENDATION
==================================================
The AQZ developer recommends that players use wired network connections whenever possible.
Wi-Fi can introduce additional latency or stuttering during synchronized Nintendo 64 netplay.
For the smoothest GoldenEye experience, Ethernet is recommended when available.
==================================================
TROUBLESHOOTING
==================================================
The game desynchronizes
Make sure everyone is:
- Using compatible Project64/AQZ configurations.
- Using the same GoldenEye 007 game version.
- Using identical save data when a save file is involved.
- Starting the session together through AQZ.
AQZ does not detect my controller
Return to:
Options → Input Settings
and make sure a normal Project64 input plugin is configured correctly.
AQZ relies on that input plugin for the actual controller input.
Private hosting does not work
Check your Windows firewall and router configuration.
Private AQZ hosting may require the selected TCP port to be forwarded.
The default AQZ port is 6400.
If private hosting is difficult to configure, try using one of the available public AQZ servers instead.
The game stutters online
Try using a wired Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi.
Network quality and latency can affect synchronized emulation.
