Halo: Combat Evolved - PC Online Multiplayer Setup
This guide explains how to set up Halo Custom Edition on PC for online multiplayer.
Halo Custom Edition is a standalone version of Halo PC released by Gearbox Software. It provides multiplayer support along with the ability to play community-created maps and other custom content.
What You Will Need
1. Halo Custom Edition installer
2. A Halo PC CD key
3. Halo Custom Edition Patch 1.0.10
Step 1 - Download and Install Halo Custom Edition
Download the Halo Custom Edition installer from HaloMaps:
Halo Custom Edition Game - HaloMaps
Run the installer and follow the installation instructions.
During installation, Halo Custom Edition will ask you to enter a Halo PC CD key. When you reach this screen, continue to Step 2 below.
Step 2 - Enter a Halo PC CD Key
Halo Custom Edition requires a Halo PC CD key to complete the installation.
If you still own an original copy of Halo PC and have its CD key, you can use that key.
Because Halo PC and Halo Custom Edition are older releases, obtaining an original unused key today can be difficult. Members of the Halo community have documented the use of older/shared CD keys to complete Halo Custom Edition installations.
The following Halo Mods community discussion contains a valid CD key:

Reddit user Due_Hyena_542 provided community-shared CD-key information in that discussion.
SGAWeb does not reproduce the CD key itself in this tutorial. Please refer to the original Reddit discussion above to view the information provided by its original source.
After entering the CD key, allow the Halo Custom Edition installer to finish completely.
Step 3 - Download and Install Patch 1.0.10
After Halo Custom Edition has finished installing, download Patch 1.0.10 from HaloMaps:
Halo Custom Edition Patch V1.0.10 - HaloMaps
Extract the downloaded patch if necessary.
Run the patch executable and follow the installation instructions.
Allow the patch to update your Halo Custom Edition installation completely before launching the game.
Patch 1.0.10 updates Halo Custom Edition to use a replacement multiplayer server instead of the original GameSpy services. It also contains networking, security, compatibility, and other fixes.
Step 4 - Launch Halo Custom Edition
After Patch 1.0.10 has finished installing, locate the installed Halo Custom Edition executable:
haloce.exe
If necessary, right-click haloce.exe and select:
Run as administrator
Halo Custom Edition should now launch.
From the game, open the multiplayer section and use the available server browser to locate and join an online multiplayer server.
Troubleshooting
If Halo Custom Edition does not launch or connect correctly, check the following:
- Make sure Halo Custom Edition was completely installed before installing Patch 1.0.10.
- Make sure Patch 1.0.10 was successfully installed.
- Make sure you are launching haloce.exe from the installed Halo Custom Edition directory.
- If the game has problems starting under Windows, try running haloce.exe as administrator.
- Some community servers may use custom maps. You may need the appropriate custom map installed before joining one of those servers.
