[PC/Dolphin] SSX On Tour - Online Netplay Setup Guide
This guide explains how to play the Nintendo GameCube version of SSX On Tour online using Dolphin Emulator's Netplay feature.
SSX On Tour supports local two-player multiplayer on GameCube but did not originally include online multiplayer. Dolphin Netplay allows players on separate computers to synchronize the game's local multiplayer over the internet.
This guide specifically covers the Nintendo GameCube version running through Dolphin Emulator.
==================================================
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
==================================================
ΓÇó Dolphin Emulator for desktop
ΓÇó Your own legally dumped GameCube copy of SSX On Tour
ΓÇó A controller or configured keyboard
ΓÇó A stable internet connection
ΓÇó Another player using the same Dolphin version
ΓÇó Matching versions of SSX On Tour
==================================================
IMPORTANT GAME FILE NOTICE
==================================================
Dolphin Emulator does not include commercial GameCube games.
SGAWeb does not host, distribute, or provide download links to copyrighted GameCube game images, ISOs, ROMs, or other copyrighted game files.
Each player should supply their own legally obtained and dumped copy of SSX On Tour.
This tutorial covers only Dolphin Emulator configuration and Netplay.
==================================================
STEP 1 - DOWNLOAD DOLPHIN EMULATOR
==================================================
Download Dolphin Emulator from the official website:
Dolphin Emulator - Official Website
Install or extract Dolphin according to the instructions for your operating system.
IMPORTANT:
Everyone participating in the Netplay session must use the same Dolphin version.
Dolphin does not allow mismatched emulator versions to participate in the same Netplay session because differences between versions can cause synchronization problems.
==================================================
STEP 2 - ADD SSX ON TOUR TO DOLPHIN
==================================================
Add your legally dumped GameCube copy of:
SSX On Tour
to Dolphin's game library.
Before attempting Netplay, launch the game normally.
Verify that:
ΓÇó SSX On Tour starts correctly.
ΓÇó Gameplay runs properly.
ΓÇó Your controller works.
ΓÇó You can access the game's local multiplayer functionality.
Dolphin currently classifies the GameCube version of SSX On Tour as Playable.
Because performance can vary between computers and Dolphin versions, make sure the game works properly for both players before attempting Netplay.
==================================================
STEP 3 - MAKE SURE BOTH PLAYERS' GAMES MATCH
==================================================
Dolphin Netplay requires all participating computers to maintain the same emulated game state.
All players should therefore use:
ΓÇó The same Dolphin version
ΓÇó The same SSX On Tour region
ΓÇó The same game revision
ΓÇó Preferably identical game dumps
For example, do not have one player using the North American version while another player uses the European or Japanese version.
Dolphin includes a Checksum feature in the Netplay window that can help verify that everyone's game files match.
==================================================
STEP 4 - CONFIGURE YOUR CONTROLLER
==================================================
From Dolphin's main window select:
Controllers
Under:
GameCube Controllers
configure Port 1 as:
Standard Controller
Select Configure and map your physical controller or keyboard.
Test your controls before attempting Netplay.
Each player should configure their own controller locally.
When one player is using each computer, Dolphin can automatically map each participant's first configured GameCube controller to the appropriate controller port in the Netplay session.
==================================================
STEP 5 - OPEN DOLPHIN NETPLAY
==================================================
From Dolphin's main menu select:
Tools -> Start NetPlay
Dolphin provides several connection methods, including:
ΓÇó Traversal Server
ΓÇó Direct Connection
ΓÇó Netplay Server Browser
For a private game between friends, the Traversal Server is generally the easiest method to try first.
==================================================
STEP 6 - HOST THE SSX ON TOUR SESSION
==================================================
One player must act as the host.
From the Netplay window:
1. Choose the Host option.
2. Select SSX On Tour.
3. Choose the Traversal Server connection method.
4. Create the Netplay session.
Dolphin will provide the host with a traversal code.
Send this code privately to the other player.
Dolphin's Traversal Server can normally establish the connection without requiring the host to manually configure router port forwarding.
==================================================
STEP 7 - JOIN THE SESSION
==================================================
The second player should open:
Tools -> Start NetPlay
Choose the Traversal Server connection method.
Enter the traversal code provided by the host.
Once connected, both players should appear inside the Netplay room.
Do NOT launch SSX On Tour separately.
Wait for the host to start the game through Dolphin's Netplay window.
==================================================
STEP 8 - CHECK CONTROLLER ASSIGNMENTS
==================================================
Before starting the game, verify the controller assignments.
For a normal two-player session:
Player 1 -> GameCube Controller Port 1
Player 2 -> GameCube Controller Port 2
When one player is using each computer, Dolphin normally handles this assignment automatically.
The host can inspect or change controller assignments from the Netplay window if necessary.
==================================================
STEP 9 - CONFIGURE THE NETPLAY BUFFER
==================================================
Dolphin uses an input buffer to compensate for network latency.
Dolphin provides a general starting guideline of approximately:
1 buffer unit for every 15 ms of latency per client.
For example, a two-player connection around 50 ms could begin around:
3-4 buffer
This is only a starting point.
If SSX On Tour stutters or slows down, try increasing the buffer.
If gameplay is stable but the controls feel unnecessarily delayed, try lowering it slightly.
==================================================
STEP 10 - START SSX ON TOUR
==================================================
Once both players are connected and their controllers are assigned, the host should start SSX On Tour from the Netplay window.
Allow the game to load normally.
Navigate to the game's local multiplayer options.
Dolphin will synchronize the local multiplayer session between the participating computers.
==================================================
STEP 11 - PLAY MULTIPLAYER
==================================================
SSX On Tour supports two-player local multiplayer on GameCube.
Select your riders and choose the multiplayer event or options you want to use.
The GameCube version supports local competitive multiplayer, including split-screen/versus play.
Once both players are ready, begin the event.
You are now playing SSX On Tour multiplayer over the internet through Dolphin Netplay.
==================================================
IMPORTANT SSX ON TOUR ONLINE DISTINCTION
==================================================
The GameCube version of SSX On Tour did not originally include online multiplayer.
Dolphin Netplay does not connect to or restore an original Electronic Arts online service for this version of the game.
Instead, Dolphin synchronizes SSX On Tour's existing local two-player multiplayer between computers over the internet.
This effectively allows two players in different locations to play as though their controllers were connected to the same GameCube.
==================================================
NETWORK RECOMMENDATIONS
==================================================
For the best Dolphin Netplay experience:
ΓÇó Use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi when possible.
ΓÇó Avoid large downloads or uploads while playing.
ΓÇó Use matching Dolphin versions.
ΓÇó Use matching SSX On Tour game files.
ΓÇó Avoid unnecessary emulator modifications.
ΓÇó Use the player with the most stable connection as host.
ΓÇó Adjust the Netplay buffer according to latency.
A stable connection is particularly important because Dolphin must keep both emulated systems synchronized.
==================================================
TROUBLESHOOTING
==================================================
The other player cannot connect
Try Dolphin's Traversal Server first.
Make sure your firewall allows Dolphin to communicate over the internet.
Traversal Server does not work
Certain Strict NAT configurations can prevent traversal connections.
The host may need to configure port forwarding and use Dolphin's Direct Connection method.
Router configuration varies, so consult your router's documentation if necessary.
SSX On Tour stutters during Netplay
Try increasing the Netplay buffer gradually.
Also verify that neither player is heavily using their internet connection for downloads, uploads, streaming, cloud backups, or other bandwidth-intensive activities.
My controller does not work
Return to:
Controllers -> GameCube Controllers
Verify that your controller is configured as a Standard Controller.
Then check the controller assignments inside the Netplay room.
Player 2 cannot control their rider
Verify that the second participant is assigned to:
GameCube Controller Port 2
The two players see different things happening
This is called a desync.
Verify:
ΓÇó Dolphin versions match.
ΓÇó SSX On Tour regions match.
ΓÇó Game revisions match.
ΓÇó Game dumps match.
ΓÇó Save synchronization is configured appropriately.
ΓÇó Players are not using conflicting modifications or emulator settings.
Use Dolphin's Checksum feature to compare game files.
If necessary, the host can also enable:
Strict Settings Sync
to help eliminate configuration differences.
==================================================
SAVE DATA AND DESYNCS
==================================================
Different memory-card data can sometimes contribute to Netplay synchronization problems.
Dolphin provides save synchronization options inside the Netplay window.
If unexplained desyncs occur, check the save synchronization settings before troubleshooting more complicated causes.
==================================================
ABOUT SSX ON TOUR NETPLAY
==================================================
SSX On Tour was designed around local multiplayer on GameCube.
Dolphin Netplay extends that local multiplayer experience across the internet without modifying the original game.
This makes it possible to enjoy SSX On Tour's two-player GameCube multiplayer remotely through Dolphin.
