[PC/Dolphin] Evolution Skateboarding - Online Netplay Setup Guide

This guide explains how to play the Nintendo GameCube version of Evolution Skateboarding online using Dolphin Emulator's Netplay feature.

Dolphin Netplay allows players on separate computers to play a game's local multiplayer modes together over the internet.

This guide covers Dolphin Emulator and Netplay configuration. It does not provide the Evolution Skateboarding game image.

==================================================
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
==================================================

ΓÇó Dolphin Emulator for desktop
ΓÇó Your own legally dumped GameCube copy of Evolution Skateboarding
ΓÇó A controller or configured keyboard
ΓÇó A stable internet connection
ΓÇó Another player using the same Dolphin version
ΓÇó Matching versions of Evolution Skateboarding

==================================================
IMPORTANT GAME FILE NOTICE
==================================================

Dolphin does not include commercial GameCube games.

SGAWeb does not host, distribute, or provide download links to copyrighted GameCube game images, ISOs, ROMs, or other copyrighted game files.

Each player should supply their own legally obtained and dumped copy of Evolution Skateboarding.

This tutorial covers only Dolphin Emulator configuration and Netplay.

==================================================
STEP 1 - DOWNLOAD DOLPHIN
==================================================

Download Dolphin Emulator from the official website:

Dolphin Emulator - Official Website

Install or extract Dolphin according to the instructions for your operating system.

IMPORTANT:

Everyone participating in the Netplay session should use the same Dolphin version.

Different Dolphin versions cannot reliably participate in the same Netplay session.

==================================================
STEP 2 - ADD EVOLUTION SKATEBOARDING TO DOLPHIN
==================================================

Add your legally dumped GameCube copy of:

Evolution Skateboarding

to Dolphin's game library.

Before attempting Netplay, launch the game normally.

Verify that:

ΓÇó The game starts correctly.
ΓÇó Gameplay runs properly.
ΓÇó Your controller works.
ΓÇó You can access the game's local multiplayer modes.

If the game does not work correctly offline, resolve that problem before attempting Netplay.

==================================================
STEP 3 - MAKE SURE BOTH PLAYERS' COPIES MATCH
==================================================

Dolphin Netplay requires players to maintain the same emulated game state.

All players should therefore use:

ΓÇó The same Dolphin version
ΓÇó The same game region
ΓÇó The same game revision
ΓÇó Preferably identical game dumps

For example, do not have one player using a North American release while another uses a European release.

Dolphin includes a Checksum feature in its Netplay window that can help verify that players are using matching game files.

Mismatched game files are a common cause of Netplay desynchronization.

==================================================
STEP 4 - CONFIGURE YOUR CONTROLLER
==================================================

Open Dolphin and select:

Controllers

For:

GameCube Controllers

configure Port 1 as:

Standard Controller

Select Configure and map your physical controller or keyboard.

Test:

ΓÇó Control Stick
ΓÇó A
ΓÇó B
ΓÇó X
ΓÇó Y
ΓÇó L
ΓÇó R
ΓÇó Z
ΓÇó Start
ΓÇó D-Pad

Each player should configure their own controller locally.

When there is one player on each computer, Dolphin can automatically assign each participant's locally configured first GameCube controller to the appropriate Netplay controller port.

==================================================
STEP 5 - OPEN DOLPHIN NETPLAY
==================================================

From Dolphin's main window select:

Tools -> Start NetPlay

Dolphin provides multiple ways to establish a Netplay session, including:

ΓÇó Traversal Server
ΓÇó Direct Connection
ΓÇó Netplay Server Browser

For a private session between friends, the Traversal Server is generally the easiest method to try first.

==================================================
STEP 6 - HOST THE NETPLAY SESSION
==================================================

One player must act as the host.

From the Netplay window:

1. Select the Host option.
2. Select Evolution Skateboarding.
3. Choose the Traversal Server connection method.
4. Create the Netplay room.

Dolphin will provide the host with a traversal code.

Send this code privately to the other player.

The traversal system normally allows players to establish the connection without manually configuring router port forwarding.

==================================================
STEP 7 - JOIN THE SESSION
==================================================

The second player should open:

Tools -> Start NetPlay

Choose the option to connect using the Traversal Server.

Enter the traversal code supplied by the host.

Once the connection succeeds, both players should appear in the Netplay room.

Do NOT launch Evolution Skateboarding separately.

Wait for the host to start the game from the Netplay window.

==================================================
STEP 8 - CHECK CONTROLLER ASSIGNMENTS
==================================================

Before starting the game, verify the controller assignments.

For a normal two-player session:

Player 1 -> GameCube Controller Port 1

Player 2 -> GameCube Controller Port 2

If each person is playing from a separate computer, Dolphin normally maps each player's first configured GameCube controller automatically.

The host can inspect or change controller assignments from the Netplay window if necessary.

==================================================
STEP 9 - CONFIGURE THE NETPLAY BUFFER
==================================================

Dolphin uses an input buffer to compensate for network latency.

A useful starting guideline from Dolphin is approximately:

1 buffer unit for every 15 ms of latency per client.

For example, two players with approximately 50 ms latency might begin around:

3-4 buffer

This is only a starting point.

If gameplay stutters or slows down, try increasing the buffer.

If the connection is stable but controls feel unnecessarily delayed, you may be able to reduce it.

==================================================
STEP 10 - START EVOLUTION SKATEBOARDING
==================================================

Once everyone is connected and the controllers are assigned, the host should start Evolution Skateboarding through the Netplay window.

Navigate to the game's local multiplayer mode.

Dolphin will synchronize the local multiplayer session between the participating computers.

You can then select the appropriate multiplayer mode, skaters, and other game options and begin playing.

==================================================
NETWORK RECOMMENDATIONS
==================================================

For the best Dolphin Netplay experience:

ΓÇó Use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi when possible.
ΓÇó Avoid large downloads or uploads while playing.
ΓÇó Use the player with the most stable connection as the host.
ΓÇó Keep Dolphin updated.
ΓÇó Avoid unnecessary emulator configuration changes.
ΓÇó Adjust the Netplay buffer according to latency.

Dolphin notes that latency directly affects how low the input delay can be, so a stable wired connection can significantly improve the experience.

==================================================
TROUBLESHOOTING DESYNCS
==================================================

A desync occurs when the participating Dolphin instances stop representing the same game state.

If players begin seeing different things happen in the game, verify:

ΓÇó Everyone is using the same Dolphin version.
ΓÇó Everyone is using the same Evolution Skateboarding region.
ΓÇó Everyone is using the same game revision.
ΓÇó Game dumps match.
ΓÇó Players are not using conflicting modifications or settings.

Use Dolphin's Netplay Checksum feature to compare the game files between players.

You can also try enabling:

Strict Settings Sync

if configuration differences appear to be causing desynchronization.

==================================================
SAVE DATA
==================================================

Different local save data can sometimes contribute to synchronization problems.

Dolphin's Netplay window provides save synchronization options.

For a straightforward multiplayer session where persistent save progress is unnecessary, the host can use the appropriate Netplay save-data option for the session.

If you experience unexplained desyncs, check the save synchronization settings before troubleshooting more complicated causes.

==================================================
CONNECTION TROUBLESHOOTING
==================================================

The other player cannot connect

Try the Traversal Server connection method first.

Also verify that your firewall allows Dolphin to communicate over the internet.

Traversal Server does not work

Certain Strict NAT configurations can prevent traversal connections.

In this situation, the host may need to configure port forwarding and use Dolphin's Direct Connection method.

Router configuration varies considerably, so consult the documentation for your particular router.

The game is stuttering

Increase the Netplay buffer gradually.

Also make sure neither player is heavily using their internet connection for downloads, uploads, streaming, or other bandwidth-intensive activity.

The controls do not work

Return to:

Controllers -> GameCube Controllers

and verify that your controller is correctly configured in the first available controller port.

Then check the controller assignments in the Netplay room.

The players see different things happening

This is likely a desync.

Compare the Dolphin versions, game revisions, regions, checksums, save synchronization, and emulator settings.
