Lost Planet: Extreme Condition - Colonies Edition
Legacy GFWL Online Multiplayer Setup Guide

This guide explains how to install the original Games for Windows LIVE (GFWL) version of Lost Planet: Extreme Condition - Colonies Edition for PC and prepare it for its legacy online multiplayer functionality.

Colonies Edition was released for PC and Xbox 360 in 2008 and expanded the original Lost Planet with additional multiplayer maps, modes, characters, and weapons. The original PC version used Microsoft's Games for Windows LIVE service.

This tutorial specifically covers the original PC/GFWL release of Colonies Edition.

Important

This is a legacy version of the game. Multiplayer functionality has not yet been independently tested by SGAWeb. Community compatibility information indicates that Colonies Edition's GFWL multiplayer remains functional, but results may vary depending on Windows version, GFWL configuration, networking, and other compatibility factors.

What You Will Need

1. A legitimate copy of Lost Planet: Extreme Condition - Colonies Edition for PC, or access to preserved original installation media.

2. A method of mounting a DVD disc image if your copy is stored as a disc-image file.

3. Games for Windows LIVE components compatible with your version of Windows.

4. A Microsoft account for GFWL sign-in if required.

Step 1 - Obtain the Original PC/GFWL Release

The version covered by this guide is the original 2008 PC release of Lost Planet: Extreme Condition - Colonies Edition.

BetaArchive preserves information about an original U.S. DVD release of the game:

BetaArchive - Lost Planet: Extreme Condition (Colonies Edition) GFWL DVD

BetaArchive categorizes this release as abandonware and identifies the archived media as an original DVD-ROM release.

SGAWeb does not host or redistribute Lost Planet game files, product keys, or copyrighted installation media.

Step 2 - Mount the Disc Image

If your copy of Colonies Edition is stored as an ISO or another supported DVD disc-image format, Windows can often mount the image as a virtual DVD drive.

On modern versions of Windows:

1. Locate the disc-image file in File Explorer.
2. Right-click the file.
3. Select Mount.
4. Windows should create a virtual DVD drive containing the installation files.

If Windows does not provide a Mount option for the image format you have, use an appropriate disc-image mounting application that supports that format.

Open the newly mounted virtual DVD drive to access the game's installer.

Step 3 - Install Lost Planet: Colonies Edition

Run the game's setup program from the mounted DVD.

Follow the original installation wizard and allow the game to install normally.

If the installer offers to install Games for Windows LIVE or other required components, allow the installation to complete.

Do not discard or delete your original installation media after installation. Legacy PC games may occasionally require files from the original media for repair or reinstallation.

Step 4 - Install or Update Games for Windows LIVE

Because Colonies Edition was designed for Games for Windows LIVE, modern versions of Windows may require additional GFWL components.

BetaArchive specifically notes that users running Windows 8 or later may need newer Games for Windows LIVE software.

If the game launches normally and GFWL operates correctly, additional changes may not be necessary.

If GFWL fails to initialize, sign in, or display its interface, additional compatibility configuration may be required.

Because Microsoft's original GFWL software is discontinued, SGAWeb recommends using trusted preservation/community documentation when troubleshooting GFWL installations.

Step 5 - Launch Colonies Edition

After installation, launch Lost Planet: Extreme Condition - Colonies Edition.

If necessary:

1. Right-click the game's executable or shortcut.
2. Select Run as administrator.

Allow any first-run configuration to complete.

If the Games for Windows LIVE interface appears, sign in using the appropriate Microsoft/GFWL account.

Step 6 - Test Multiplayer

From the game's main menu, enter the multiplayer portion of Colonies Edition.

The original release supports several online multiplayer modes and was designed around Games for Windows LIVE.

Community compatibility testing reports that Colonies Edition can still operate with LAN and LIVE multiplayer lobbies, including voice communication.

Because SGAWeb has not yet independently tested this preserved installation, multiplayer should currently be considered community-reported working.

This section of the tutorial will be updated after additional testing.

Troubleshooting

If the game launches but Games for Windows LIVE does not work:

- Verify that the required GFWL components are installed.
- Try launching the game as administrator.
- Restart Windows after installing or changing GFWL components.
- Verify that Windows Firewall is not blocking the game.
- Make sure you are running Colonies Edition rather than the original Lost Planet: Extreme Condition release.

The original Lost Planet and Colonies Edition use different multiplayer environments. Players using one edition cannot necessarily join players using the other.
