Halo 2 - Xbox & PC Online Multiplayer Setup
This guide explains how to play the original Xbox version of Halo 2 online using Insignia.
Two setup methods are covered:
1. Original Xbox hardware
2. PC using the Xemu Xbox emulator
Both methods ultimately connect to Insignia, a replacement online service for the original Xbox.
Important Halo 2 Requirements
Halo 2 requires Title Update 5 (version 1.5) to play through Insignia.
All four Halo 2 multiplayer map packs are also required for public matchmaking.
Insignia can provide the required Halo 2 update and map content.
==================================================
PART 1 - ORIGINAL XBOX + INSIGNIA
==================================================
Step 1 - Prepare Your Original Xbox
Before registering with Insignia, make sure your Xbox has the latest Xbox Live dashboard.
According to Insignia, the dashboard version should be:
D:1.00.5960.01
Both stock and modified original Xbox consoles can use Insignia, although the method used to launch the Insignia Setup Assistant differs.
Because those procedures can change and depend on whether your console is stock, softmodded, hardmodded, or using Project Stellar, follow Insignia's current official connection guide:
Official Insignia Connection Guide
Step 2 - Run the Insignia Setup Assistant
Download and launch the appropriate Insignia Setup Assistant for your Xbox configuration by following the official connection guide.
Once the Setup Assistant is running:
1. Select Register Xbox.
2. Allow the registration process to finish.
3. Use Troubleshoot if the registration or network test reports a problem.
After successful registration, exit the Setup Assistant.
Step 3 - Configure Your Network
Open the Xbox network settings and perform a connection test.
Insignia's current connection guide specifies:
Primary DNS:
46.101.64.175
Secondary DNS:
Use a public DNS service such as 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1.
Your connection test should successfully complete before proceeding.
Step 4 - Create Your Insignia Account
Visit:
Insignia
Register your email address to receive the subscription/invite code required by the original Xbox Live dashboard.
Return to the Xbox dashboard and begin creating a new Xbox Live account.
Follow Insignia's official instructions carefully when completing the original Xbox account-registration screens.
IMPORTANT:
Use the same email address that you used to request your Insignia code.
Insignia is a free service.
Step 5 - Start Halo 2
Insert/start your legitimate copy of Halo 2 and select Xbox Live.
Sign in using the Insignia Gamertag you created.
Step 6 - Install Halo 2 Title Update 5
Halo 2 must be running Title Update 5.
The version is displayed as:
1.5
Insignia can provide the required update automatically.
Allow Halo 2 to download/install the update when prompted.
Step 7 - Install the Halo 2 Multiplayer Maps
All four Halo 2 multiplayer map packs are required for public matchmaking through Insignia.
Insignia makes the required map packs available.
If you own the original Halo 2 Multiplayer Map Pack disc, Insignia recommends using it for the first three map packs to reduce download time.
For current Halo 2 requirements, see:
Official Insignia Halo 2 Page
Step 8 - Play Online
Once Halo 2 is updated to version 1.5 and the required maps are installed:
1. Start Halo 2.
2. Select Xbox Live.
3. Sign into your Insignia Gamertag.
4. Enter matchmaking or create/join a custom game.
Your original Xbox should now be able to play Halo 2 online through Insignia.
==================================================
PART 2 - PC + XEMU + INSIGNIA
==================================================
Important
Xemu emulates the original Xbox version of Halo 2. This means this section is not using the separate Windows Vista release of Halo 2.
You will need Xemu and the required Xbox system/game files obtained from legitimate sources.
SGAWeb does not provide Xbox BIOS, ROM, game-image, or other copyrighted system files.
Step 1 - Install Xemu
Download Xemu from its official website and follow its current setup documentation.
Configure the required Xbox system files according to Xemu's documentation.
The referenced video tutorial demonstrates configuring:
- MCPX boot ROM
- Flash ROM / BIOS
- Xbox hard disk image
- Controller
- Display settings
- Game directory
After changing the required system configuration, restart Xemu if prompted.
Step 2 - Verify Halo 2 in Xemu
Configure Xemu to use your legally obtained Halo 2 game image.
Launch Halo 2 and verify that the game runs correctly before proceeding with the Insignia setup.
Step 3 - Prepare Xemu for Insignia
The referenced video demonstrates preparing Xemu's emulated Xbox environment and then loading the Insignia Setup Assistant.
IMPORTANT:
Some preparation procedures can erase or replace data on the emulated Xbox hard disk.
Back up your Xemu hard disk image and any important data before performing operations that modify or restore it.
For current Insignia configuration information, refer to:
Official Insignia Connection Guide
Step 4 - Register the Emulated Xbox
Load the Insignia Setup Assistant in Xemu.
Choose:
Register Xbox
Allow registration to complete.
Run the troubleshooting checks and confirm that the network tests pass.
Step 5 - Configure Insignia Networking
Verify the Xbox network settings inside the emulated environment.
Insignia's current primary DNS is:
46.101.64.175
A public DNS such as:
8.8.8.8
or:
1.1.1.1
can be used as the secondary DNS.
Perform the Xbox Live connection test and confirm that the connection succeeds.
Step 6 - Create Your Insignia Gamertag
Request an Insignia subscription/invite code from:
Insignia
Use the Xbox dashboard inside Xemu to create the Xbox Live/Insignia account.
Make sure you use the same email address that received your Insignia code.
Complete the account creation process and save your Gamertag information.
Step 7 - Start Halo 2 and Install the Required Update
Load Halo 2 in Xemu.
Create/select a Halo 2 profile and connect to Xbox Live using your Insignia account.
If Halo 2 reports that an update is required, allow the update to install.
Halo 2 requires:
Title Update 5 / Version 1.5
Step 8 - Install the Required Halo 2 Map Packs
All four Halo 2 multiplayer map packs are required for public matchmaking.
The referenced video demonstrates obtaining the available content through the original in-game Xbox Live content system.
This is the simplest method for an SGAWeb tutorial because it keeps the process within Halo 2 and Insignia.
The second referenced video also demonstrates an alternative method of preparing Xbox title-update/DLC installer images for Xemu. This can be useful for advanced users, but it is not required for the basic Halo 2 setup described here.
See the second video under Sources and Credit if you want to explore that alternative method.
Step 9 - Play Halo 2 Online
Once Halo 2 is running version 1.5 and all required multiplayer maps are installed:
1. Launch Halo 2.
2. Select Xbox Live.
3. Sign into your Insignia Gamertag.
4. Enter matchmaking or join/create a custom game.
You should now be able to play the original Xbox version of Halo 2 online from your PC through Xemu and Insignia.
==================================================
TROUBLESHOOTING
==================================================
Halo 2 matchmaking error / blank Message of the Day
Insignia documents a known Halo 2 issue that can prevent matchmaking or cause the Message of the Day to appear blank.
The solution is to clear the Xbox Ticket Cache.
The Insignia Setup Assistant provides an option for clearing the Ticket Cache.
Official instructions:
Insignia - Clearing Ticket Cache
Halo 2 reports that an update is required
Confirm that Halo 2 has Title Update 5 installed.
The game should display:
1.5
Matchmaking maps are missing
All four Halo 2 multiplayer map packs are required for public matchmaking.
Confirm that all required content has been installed.
Xemu users experiencing problems
Before changing your emulated Xbox hard disk or reinstalling components, make a backup of your Xemu hard disk image.
Also confirm that Halo 2 works normally in Xemu before troubleshooting Insignia separately.
